Mirrorball is the Socal dream pop duo of Alexandra Johnstone and Scott Watson that brings together years of experience in the LA music scene—Johnstone fronted the underground folk-rock band White Dove, while Watson played in several Silverlake-era indie-rock bands.
Described by Grimy Goods as “two dream heads burning rubber down Los Angeles freeways,” they released the first song they wrote together “This Time” as a single in 2019 through Dangerbird Records, quickly catching the attention of indie producer Chris Coady (Beach House, DIIV) which led to a slew of singles and an upcoming EP.
Described as a “dream pop with '70s AM radiance,” Mirrorball draws from influences like Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" era and the melodic psychedelia of Broadcast. Their starry pop has garnered comparisons to artists such as TOPS, Stereolab, Midnight Sister, and Air. Their singles have already found support on platforms like David Dean Burkhart’s YouTube channel, Spotify’s Fresh Finds Indie and 88.9 KXLU.
Red Hot Dust” is a gorgeous and brooding track built around twinkling keys, a subtle yet supple bass line and propulsive drumming paired with Johnstone’s gorgeous and expressive vocal. While sonically bringing a synthesis of Beach House, Scott Walker, and 70s AM rock." —joy of violent movement
slightly reminiscent of Air, or, at least, what I can remember of them after my ex left the soundtrack to The Virgin Suicides in my car. The sound is dreamy and sublime and will wash over you as though it’s been months since you’ve felt any peace.
The vocals of “Red Hot Dust” contain this same sensation. They sound as though they’ve been expertly doubled and they enter your ears the same way that the tide rolls in as it softens the sand. —uptohearmusic
